I’m a huge philosophy nerd, so your Symposium fic is the chefs kiss of fanfic and academia! I’ve reread it so many times now and, each time, I find another platonic element or link to the philosophy, and I basically scream with joy. Also mixing the Jedi with Plato’s philosophy is such an interesting and well-fitting mix! Like the realm of forms parallel to the force, obikin and the ladder of love parallel to their relationship, and obv the master apprentice dynamic so central to the symposium. Even the cave allegory in one way, like, once they start talking about love, obi wan can’t unhear it - he can’t go back from the light, in that regard. It’s so amazing to read a fic and keep on finding new things to love; reading it just brightens my day, and because I can’t send you an exorbitant number of kudos on ao3, please let this stand in their place <3<3<3

and don’t get me started on lex talionis! It’s such a gripping narrative!!! Like, for the first half/three quarters, there’s this slow decline in everyone’s mental state, relationships, and in general wellbeing. And it felt like I wanted to climb the walls, almost shouting at my screen, because if they would just TALK or THINK, but it’s like a tragedy because the CANT or at least as they are at the beginning they can’t, and that was so wonderful to read. A huge part of that was that I was already invested in the characters, so the stakes were raised from the get-go, but also it was the way you mirrored the drama of canon’s breakdown, and you managed to do that on a completely different playing field. And THEN you made them CHANGE!!! And it felt plausible! It felt in character! And all the hope and joy that they lost was returned, but it wasn’t the same, and that was okay!!! And to me, it felt like that decline and rise mirrored the way you integrated Roman history (I could very well be wrong lol); fall of the republic, rise of the Augustan empire - things are irrevocably changed, but they’re still standing! They’re alive! It’s so deeply moving and emotional, I can’t even articulate it as well as I’d like! Also, I was wondering, in LT, did u base any particular characters’ arcs on actually folks from Roman history? And what would you say is your favourite ancient person in general? It’s so interesting to see how ur Classics background informs your writing. In the most complementary way I can say it, it’s giving off ancient history Tolkien vibes, which is genuinely so inspiring to me as someone who wants to find their own writing niche

yesss augustus was definitely a central inspiration for me for my fall of the republic story!! just as i think he was for lucas, with his ascension to supreme executive power and institution of an empire, the way he participated in and then brought a devastating period of civil war to a close, offering up long desired peace and security under his autocratic rule. he's a popular leader whose figure looms large as an example still after thousands of years. i wanted obi-wan to 'win' in the same way he did, usurping palpatine's claim to being that leader who took advantage of chaos to seize power.

i just think obi-wan would be such a devastating sith lord, brilliant and charismatic, who could outplay sidious at his own game, very much in the tradition of augustus's strategic decisions. obi-wan lies to himself about it, but his corruption is to always seek ever expanding circles of control. anakin and the clones have strong personal loyalty to him, echoing the loyal legions in civil war that swept octavian into power. padmé has shades of cicero and other republic figures who lost out and were removed from public life (i let her keep her life though ofc).

basically the whole political aspect was modeled on the fall of the roman republic haha you got that exactly right. i'm just so thrilled that you've engaged with the classical influences that i both consciously and unconsciously include in my stories. that's such an unbelievably kind analogy with tolkien, thank you!! there are just so many greek and roman figures that have fascinated and compelled me: homer and hesiod of course, pythagoras and heraclitus among other presocratics, aristotle's virtue ethics, and the moral philosophers of rome like epictetus and marcus aurelius are very dear to my heart.

other favorites are thucydides and herodotus, euripides and aescylus. pericles and alcibiades are fascinating figures. in terms of rome, cicero and catiline, catullus and horace, lucretius and seneca, virgil and ovid, tacitus and plutarch. the lives of antony and cleopatra especially are fascinating. so is alexander ofc, but i spent most of my time on archaic greece not the hellenistic period. i could keep going saljkdlkfdjsa but i will stop, thank you for the excuse to geek out!!!! it's always fun to think about, so i invent as many excuses to do so as possible haha

i wanna ask the audience: do you tend to change the voices of the characters when u read fic depending on how in-character the author writes them? or do you just hear your own voice narrating the story? do you reassign them better voices (i imagine part of that is making fancasts via voice actors..)?

im wondering bc i once listened to a podficcers take on a pwp and now whenever i read one of those authors fics i still hear that podficcers voice instead of the characters lol it was that good! i cant unhear it so its a part of my reading experience now i guess

I might get this if I went and read the books I've listened to with particularly fantastic narrators who do the voices. Other audiobooks where people just read in their own voices or fic where I haven't listened to a podfic, not so much.

I don't hear things I'm reading. Not in my own voice. Not in any voice.

In general, I don't pay attention to voices. I can spot RM's in a song in 2 seconds, but I can't even identify 99% of musicians I like by voice, never mind actors playing characters. Unless they're particularly distinctive and I really love their voice, I just don't care. Hearing them during reading would be like silently mouthing the words to myself as I read: possible but rare.

I don't know if I talked about this either, or to what extent that has been analysed, but I don't really hear it? It's a heavily edited sound, it does sound like a muffled voice, but it's so distorted it might as well be one of those quack duck toys lol. I always go "nah" whenever "we hear Harry" in one of Louis' or louis related videos tho, I really just don't hear it. The only time where I really do go hold up is in this interview but then still it could just be people at the radio station.

But on the other hand, with all the vague lil shittery they're getting into, I do totally believe they're capable and would enjoy behaving like that, I mean putting eachother's distorted voices into their music, like yeah I can totally see them being that extra, so who knows. It could be.

You put my feelings about both of Olivia Rodrigos songs into words. I kinda enjoy both but I dont see a big replay value for me which I guess a lot of other people do. On first listen of this new song, i thought the lyrics were kinda eh cuz it seemed kinda similar to Drivers License..the whole we used to do that thing, and plus the same thing has been done in other songs before like Want You Back by Cher Lloyd so idk. The specific lyrics were kinda cringey at first but on my second listen I didnt mind it as much. I do wonder what her album will be like. I can only kinda see the Taylor comparisons..she kinda reminds me more of Lorde or maybe Conan Gray, lyrically and sonically. One thing that kinda bugs me is I think the lyric when you're with her kinda makes more sense too but I know it's used for a rhyme so whatever. Also Someone pointed out the verse sounds similar to No Surprises by Radiohead though and now I cant unhear it lol but still a good song I guess. At this point I like her, but I feel like something's missing compared to people who already love her a lot but she has potential for sure! I kinda feel the same way about most new artists though, like Billie Eilish for example, so idk. What I mean is..I like the same artists for years, and can only really love a new artist if I actually relate to their lyrics so maybe that's why.

i’m glad i’m not the only one! it’s all about that replay value for me which just isn’t really there and i agree the lyrics for both seem to pretty much say the same thing (obviously it’s normal to write multiple songs on one situation, but it doesn’t really bring anything new for me). i can see the lorde comparison too. i’m definitely not writing her off but right now i’m not feeling the same hype as so many people are - it’s similar with billie for me too, i like one of her songs but haven’t got into her overall. i think to get into a new artist you’ve really got to feel some kind of connection!

so i actually waited until i had a moment to properly watch all the track videos after seeing this - and it was so amazing wtf. i love how the make me happy track vid is actually p different to the mv like the colours being bolder, her outfits the set etc etc. so interesting fr - makes u think abt how the same song can be interpreted with different vibes and energies

idk if i have unpopular opinions??? bc i just know them as my opinions y'know and im not sure what the 'popular' opinion is on a lot of things but here are some thoughts i have that might get me some haterz on stan twt i guess:

the hybe villian agenda - attributing every decision that changes/impacts svt's status quo to hybe (i.e. gose broadcast time, more american promos etc) seems petty and unnecessary. maybe it's bc i started off in kpop years ago as a bts stan but we as fans dont know shit about their internal company/business agendas, not to mention that these changes are nothing to get worked up over in the big scheme of things ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ now, if svt didnt renew, then it would be another story but they did (thank goodness) so ppl just need to chill lol

aju nice as a song is good but not great - everything about aju nice and its legacy is ICONIC but after hearing the licking/slurping sound sprinkled in the background, i cant unhear it so it’s kinda ruined for me

Honestly I was so blinded by him in the beginning I didn’t notice his nasal notes until recently…and I love reading your analysis of his vocals so I think about it more now (I had no clue what registers and all were lol but I kind of have an idea now). I wish he would sing more like that cover he did or all of 27 album basically…yes his solo era ����

omg yay for learning about registers!!! thats awesome :D ok but im not really a vocalist or someone trained in vocal stuff so a lot of what i say is probably wrong and i cant really educate someone confidently on anything vocal (musical choices and just music terms in general yes, vocal skill nah). but ifeel u…i wish he would sing like he does when he sings his solo stuff…which is why i repetitively watch the dilemma concert over and over again bc his vocals were kind of nice there.

im literally the complete opposite of you haha…all i noticed was his nasal in the beginning and now im kind of learning to unhear it almost? esp after listening to shine live like that performance completely changed my perception of his voice. ive been a fan of sunggyus solo music for as long as ive been in infinite…but i cant say the same about his voice. woohyun has always been my fav infinite vocalist. but now that im going back and relistening to some of infinites songs i feel like i made up 50% of sunggyus nasal hahah bc there are a good number of ifnt songs where he doesnt sing as nasal as i remember

i think im really sensitive to nasal voices; its probably my biggest singing pet peeve. a person could be singing with the relatively bad technique and if they’re not nasal, i wouldnt mind them as much as ppl who are nasal and sing with better technique (cougcough dongwoo vs hoya coughcough). but being nasal does limit how well u can sing bc u place ur voice into ur nose and that placement is not good nooopeeeee not for good sounding notes. like even the slightest nasal puts me of. 

ok but if u started off with solo gyu its easy to see how it would have been hard to hear his nasal notes bc he’s not /as/ nasal with his solo stuff. also when he sings his solo stuff live he almost completely loses his nasal idk why he does that but he does. hes way more nasal and pushy and strainy within infinite songs (and infinite songs tend to be higher like the eye was so freaking high idk why they did that they should write songs in more comfortable ranges even if its lower…and being one of the better singers in infinite he gets the higher parts…his solo songs probably dont go as high as the eye.)
